The Bank of England has held Venezuela's gold since 2018, when it refused to release reserves to Nicolás Maduro's government — recognising instead Juan Guaidó's parallel administration. Guaidó's interim government dissolved in 2023. The UK courts are now deciding who gets €4 billion in bullion based on which Venezuelan politician they preferred eight years ago.
