The rial has lost 95% of its value against the dollar since Trump reimposed sanctions in 2018. Eight years later, Tehran still can't keep the lights on. The regime's response to chronic fuel shortages has been the same each time: print money, subsidise imports, wait for the next crisis. The Strait closure has cut oil exports to near zero for six months, which means no dollars coming in and no way to defend the currency without burning through what's left of reserves. Another fuel price shock will trigger riots. The government knows it. That's why the dollar is at 208,000.
