The OECD sovereign debt-to-GDP ratio hit 74% in 2024. Japan is at 264%, the US at 123%, France at 112%. The policy menu remains: inflate, default, or cut spending no politician will touch. Boland calls this a problem with no solutions because the only solutions are politically unspeakable — which makes them solutions nonetheless, just ones that will arrive via crisis rather than choice.
