The US is negotiating energy deals with Russia while Russia burns through 1,500 soldiers a day grinding toward Ukrainian cities it plans to freeze this winter. Either Washington believes Moscow will actually decouple war aims from oil revenue, or this is a bet that Ukraine's bargaining position improves once the lights go out in Kyiv.
