The United States crossed $40 trillion in public debt in a fiscal environment where the deficit is running at $2 trillion annually — double the 3% of GDP target — and the debt ceiling was just raised by $5 trillion earlier this year. That's $120,000 of federal debt for every man, woman, and child in the country, accruing interest at rates the Fed is holding north of 3.5% while inflation remains stubbornly above target.
