Trump is reportedly considering a toll on all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz — which the US Navy currently protects at taxpayer expense while 20% of global oil flows through. If implemented, it would be the first time a maritime chokepoint has been monetised by a non-coastal state since the medieval Bosphorus.
