The US added $2.6 trillion in public debt over the past 12 months to reach $40.44 trillion, all while the Fed raised reserve rates to 3.90% and the 10-year Treasury climbed to 5.15%. Somebody is paying 5% to borrow while running a $1.9 trillion deficit — which means the debt service line is now eating the discretionary budget for breakfast.
