DW NOTE
The US holds $1.6 trillion in outstanding federal student loans — securitised debt the government issues to itself, then services at a loss while borrowers defer, default, or enter income-driven repayment plans that forgive the principal after twenty years. The government records the loans at face value as assets, even though collections run consistently below projections. It's a Ponzi structure: new loans fund the forgiveness on old ones, and the gap gets rolled into the deficit, which is already running at $1.25 trillion through fiscal 2026.
