The White House backing 500% tariffs on Chinese and Indian oil imports from Russia would mark a direct assault on the refining margins of Asia's largest economies. India imported 1.6 million barrels per day of Russian crude in 2025, bought at a discount that underwrote its petrochemical sector; China took more than double that. A tariff at that level does not discourage trade—it ends it, forcing New Delhi and Beijing to choose between paying five times spot for Russian oil or abandoning suppliers they spent two years integrating into their refinery infrastructure after Western sanctions began.
