Oyedele — the chairman of Nigeria's tax reform committee — has done the math. He says reinstating fuel subsidies would crater the naira past ₦4,000 per dollar. Nigeria devalued four times between 2020 and 2023. Each time officials promised it was the last. Subsidies always return when elections approach, and the naira always resumes its slide. With Brent above $100 and the Hormuz closure intact, the fiscal arithmetic has only gotten worse.
