Japan has bought an estimated ¥60 trillion in dollar reserves since 2022 trying to prop up the yen — roughly the GDP of Indonesia. The currency keeps falling anyway because the BOJ refuses to let bond yields rise enough to make the trade unworkable. You can burn through any amount of reserves if the policy contradiction is structural, and this one is: zero rates in Japan, 3.5% in the US, and a central bank that still thinks it can dictate the price of money by decree.
