Iran is now threatening to sanction and detain any ship entering the Persian Gulf that doesn't coordinate with Tehran — not just vessels in the Strait itself. The Strait has been effectively closed since February, with 2,000 ships still stranded and global oil supply down 4 million barrels per day. Extending the enforcement zone turns an existing blockade into a formal claim on Gulf traffic. South Korea is deciding whether to send aircraft; Iran says doing so makes Seoul a military target.
