India bought 1.9 million barrels per day of Russian crude in 2025 — a third of its total imports — at a 20% discount to Brent. A 100% tariff would double the landed cost overnight, forcing New Delhi to either absorb the hit or pivot to Gulf suppliers at spot prices 40% higher. Washington is threatening to erase India's arbitrage on the theory that discounted Russian barrels fund the war in Ukraine. The real effect would be higher inflation in Mumbai and no measurable reduction in Moscow's revenue, since China would simply absorb the diverted volume.
