The establishment survey counts paychecks. The household survey counts people who say they have jobs. When they diverge by 1.8 million in eight months, one of two things is true: either the U.S. added millions of second jobs with no corresponding humans, or the payroll print is a lagging fiction. The gap is now wider than the entire 2001 recession job loss.
