The IMF is describing as "worrisome" a debt trajectory it has actively encouraged. Since 2020, the Fund has told 85 countries to "spend whatever it takes" while backstopping currency collapses with loans that require more borrowing to service. When sovereign debt finally breaches the postwar record during an actual shooting war that has cut global oil supply by 5.7 million barrels per day, "worrisome" is the diagnosis of someone who sold the disease as the cure.
