DW NOTE
Government debt becomes a concern when markets start pricing the risk that it won't be repaid in full value. At $35.7 trillion US federal debt and an $1.8 trillion deficit through July 2026, that's not geopolitical anxiety — it's arithmetic. The Fed held rates flat all year while inflation ran at 3.4%, meaning real rates stayed negative and bondholders kept losing purchasing power. That's the actual fixed income risk: not war headlines, but central banks that can't tighten because the governments they finance can't afford the coupon.
