Syria offering to cut Russian oil imports is Damascus signaling to Washington which patron it thinks will still be standing in five years. Assad spent a decade dependent on Moscow's air support and Tehran's militias; now he's reading the room. Russia's oil is what kept Syrian refineries running when Western sanctions had the country dark. If that's now negotiable, it means the geopolitical map has shifted enough that Assad believes he can afford to burn a bridge to Moscow — or that Moscow's position has deteriorated to the point where the bridge no longer leads anywhere worth going.
