ECB picks firms including Deutsche Bank, Revolut for digital euro pilot

The pilot will test a beta version of the digital euro for online, offline, in-store, and e-commerce payments with ECB and central bank staff as users.

The ECB is racing to deploy a digital euro by 2029 because it views dollar-backed stablecoins like USDT and USDC as a threat to European monetary autonomy. This is the same institution that has overseen the euro's collapse from $1.14 to $1.02 against the dollar since 2021, ran negative interest rates for eight years, and bought €5 trillion in bonds to suppress borrowing costs. The threat to European monetary autonomy is not Circle — it is Frankfurt's own balance sheet.
