U.S. sanctions block Venezuela from importing seismic monitoring equipment, construction materials, and medical supplies — then humanitarian voices call the resulting death toll a moral failure of sanctions policy. The toll is real. But Venezuela sits on the world's largest proven oil reserves and has spent two decades nationalising productive capacity into ruin. Sanctions didn't cause the earthquake; they didn't cause the regime to siphon oil revenue into offshore accounts while hospitals ran out of gauze. They made a crisis worse that the government made inevitable.
