Canadian oil heads to Japan for the first time in over a year as Iran war tightens Middle East supplies - Reuters

Canada hasn't shipped oil to Japan since early 2025, and now it takes an Iran war to reopen the route. That tells you everything about the economics of Pacific crude flows: they only make sense when the Persian Gulf doesn't. Japanese refiners would rather pay the Panama Canal toll and the transcontinental pipeline tariff than buy Saudi crude at a war premium.
